Our client is an is a growing player in the UK’s national infrastructure sector, specialising in the delivery of large-scale capital programmes within the Water and Power industries.

The Role

A vacancy has arisen for a Commercial Director to provide strategic leadership and financial oversight for the Northamptonshire-based business unit. Reporting to the Managing Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for the commercial health of a substantial portfolio of works, ensuring profitable delivery across complex frameworks and individual projects.

The Commercial Director will act as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, bridging the gap between site-level delivery and board-level strategy.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Management: Leading the commercial function to ensure the business unit achieves its financial targets, including margin protection and cash flow optimisation.
Contractual Oversight: Managing high-value NEC4 and bespoke contracts within the Water and Power sectors, ensuring all commercial risks are identified and mitigated.
Tender & Bid Strategy: Overseeing the commercial element of new business acquisitions, ensuring that bids are robust, competitively priced, and aligned with the company’s risk appetite.
Relationship Management: Acting as the primary commercial point of contact for key utility clients and stakeholders, fostering collaborative working relationships.
Team Leadership: Mentoring and developing a multi-tiered commercial team, including Quantity Surveyors and Commercial Managers, to ensure a high standard of professional delivery.
Supply Chain Strategy: Driving value through the procurement and management of the subcontract supply chain, ensuring compliance and performance.

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned commercial professional with a track record of success in heavy civil engineering or utilities.

Experience: Extensive experience in a senior commercial leadership role, specifically within the UK Water (AMP cycles) or Power (Distribution/Transmission) sectors.
Qualifications: A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or Civil Engineering. Professional membership of RICS or ICES is highly desirable.
Expertise: Mastery of NEC contracts and a sophisticated understanding of regulated industry commercial models.
Location: Based in or willing to commute to Northamptonshire, with the flexibility to visit client offices and sites across the region.
